Stencil Idea: Creating Stenciled Lamp Shades

Lamp Shade Gets Made Over with Cutting Edge Stencils

So, we all know how LAME Tuesdays can be. You know what else is lame? Those old thrift store finds you bought thinking you'd instantly turn them into something fabulous, but you never took the time to. How totally lame of you! Well, Cutting Edge Stencils wants you to UN-lame-ify your Tuesday AND your thrift shop lamps with a little STENCIL TLC! The following lamp shade was once a major dud before a stencil savvy DIYer got her hands on it!

Japanese Maple Leaves Stenciled Lamp

Japanese Maple Leaves stenciled on a thrift shop lamp! Miss Mustard Seed created this awesome, autumn inspired lamp shade with Cutting Edge Stencils' Japanese Maple Leaves 6 pc Stencil Set. The shade was a thrift shop find, painted with DecoArt paints and our Tree and Branch Stencil! Miss Mustard Seed started off remodeling the lamp by hand painting on slender branches with black Americana acrylic paint, and added our little Japanese leaves to the ends! The 6 pc stencil set comes with differing leaf patterns in varying sizes on 6 separate, small stencil sheets. The durable, yet flexible material of the stencils allows you to bend them to fit the shape of your lamp shade. You can use spray adhesive, painters tape, or both to hold the stencil in place as you paint it with a stencil brush. This stencil craft project shouldn't take long, and if you are careful to not overload your brush, your leaves should come out crisp and clean. Using a dense foam roller on a project like this might not be your best bet since you won't want to bend the shade by applying too much pressure with your roller. You'll be able to better apply ample amounts of color with the same consistency when using a stencil brush. Close up of the Japanese Maples Leaves stenciled on a lamp shade! Styling Thrift Shop Finds to Match the Design of the Stencil After Miss Mustard Seed had stenciled the lamp shade to her liking, she realized that the lamp base she'd chosen for the shade no longer matched the style! No big deal, though, a little paint can cure any interior style dilema! Since the base had a nickel finish, Miss Mustard Seed spray painted on a primer and then painted over it with Americana Raw Sienna DecoArt acrylic paint! To make the base more rustic and distressed, DecoArt Perfect Crackle was applied to subtly crack the honey colored paint. Once that dried, Valspar’s asphaltum glaze was added to really bring the cracks to attention. As a final touch, Miss Mustard Seed sprayed on Rockler’s finishing spray to help the paint and crackle texture last!
