An Unexpected Stenciled Twist

A Vintage Paisley Stenciled Ceiling In A Historic Home

Good morning, my home decorating enthusiasts! Every so often, Cutting Edge Stencils comes across a project that makes us stop in our tracks and stare with wonder. It's the unexpected use of color and pattern that catch us by surprise and nearly knock us off our feet. We were left in complete awe, when we came across this stenciled ceiling project. Before we share this showstopper of a ceiling, we'd like to share a little insight into this project. Meet Barbara English, former interior designer and CEO of To The Trade Only. Barbara was called in to refresh a 130-year-old historic home (circa 1884) in the West End of Atlanta. The home features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, all original heart of pine floors, and many custom features such as the 11 X 11 foot window in the kitchen. Barbara explains, “This home is filled with character that represents craftsmanship seldom seen in today’s structures. My goal was to preserve and celebrate these features but give it an updated look. The style for this period was very formal and ornate. I wanted to introduce some fun and whimsy that is more consistent with current trends.” So what did she do? Well she called in one of our favorite decorative artists, Kass Wilson. It was the perfect place to introduce a fun pattern into the space. But this ceiling contained many vents and recessed light fixtures, which would make an allover pattern appear blotched. Kass put her creative thinking cap on and came up with a solution. She selected our Vintage Paisley pattern because it was large enough to camouflage the ceiling fixtures but could be placed randomly across the ceiling. Are you sitting down because this space might just knock you off your feet? Kass painted the popular paisley pattern in various sizes across the ceiling. She selected a classic black and white color combination that is not only timeless, but also allowed the vents to become a part of the background. To get a similar look consider stenciling the pattern in Benjamin Moore's jet black 2120-10 over simply white OC-117. The dining room gives an unexpected twist to the concept of updating a historical home.
