How To Create Stenciled Canvas Art
Stenciled Canvas Art For Your Walls in Four Simple Steps
Good Morning, my DIY friends!
Cutting Edge Stencils is always shouting from the stenciled rooftops that stencils can transform walls, ceilings and furniture, but have we mentioned that you can also use stencils to create inexpensive works of art? Whether your bare walls are restricted by your renter's agreement or your inability to commit to a full wall pattern, stenciled wall art is a great option to fill them. Today we're going to show you how easy it is to create a custom work of art in just four simple steps.
Meet Lauryn, the crafty DIY mama behind the blog
The Vintage Mom. Lauryn is no newbie when it comes to stenciling, in fact, you might remember her stenciled bathroom that she wrote about in this
post.
So pretty! Well now, Lauryn is selling her home and has been super busy with cleaning and organizing the whole thing. While she was prepping her house to be listed, Lauryn realized she needed some less personalized wall decor. She decided the easiest way to add inexpensive wall art to her home, was to create it herself. And that my friends, means using a stencil! Lauryn selected one of our newer stencil designs, the
Flock of Cranes. In four simple steps, she created this adorable master piece for her office space. She says, "I seriously could not be more in love with how it turned out."
Do you love this project? We thought you would! We have the step-by-step, courtesy of The Vintage Mom right below. Then after you read it, be sure to check out the $50
stencil giveaway she's hosting on her blog.
Here's What You'll Need:
- A stencil (for this project the Flock of Cranes Stencil was used)
- Back stapled traditional canvas (can be purchased at a local craft store like Michael's or JoAnn's)
-
Stencil brush <--- We prefer the one in this link.
- Paper Towel
- Foam Plate
- Paint ( Sherwin Williams Lakeshore 6494, White and Orange Acrylic Craft Paint from a local craft store were used for this project)
- painters tape
Here are the Simple Steps for Creating Stenciled Art:
1.
Gather Materials: Start the stencil project by gathering all of the materials listed above.
2.
Prepare the Canvas: Paint the canvas the desired color. For this project, the canvas was painted white using craft paint that was purchased from a local craft store. Wait for the painted canvas to dry before moving onto step three.
3.
Start Stenciling: Position the stencil design on the canvas. We recommend using painter's tape to secure the stencil in place. Pour your craft paint onto a plate or paint tray. Then using your
stencil brush, dip it into the paint. Blot off the excess paint onto your folded paper towel until the brush looks almost dry. The key to stenciling is using as little paint as possible. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed and smudge. Next you will paint the design onto the canvas with the stencil brush using a dry brush (stippling) technique. Stippling is when you tap the brush repeatedly over the stencil opening.
4.
Complete the Pattern: Allow the paint to dry a little and reposition the stencil so you can continue to paint the pattern on the entire canvas (if needed). For this project, the cranes were painted in Sherwin Williams Lakeshore 6494. Then Lauryn painted one crane in Orange Acrylic Craft Paint for a little pop of color. Be sure to let the paint dry for two hours.
And there you have it folks. Now all we have to do is step back and admire the easy peasy, DIY stenciled canvas art!
