Meet Kimi and George, the proud parents to be of baby Olivia. Recently they shared their gorgeous nursery design on Apartment Therapy, a super popular decor website. When Kimi and her husband found out they were having a girl, they both decided they didn't want a traditional pink nursery. Instead they wanted to have fun with the space and have it reflect something meaningful to the family. And what could be more meaningful than a salute to their heritage? Kimi said, "We are both from the Caribbean — George is from Puerto Rico and I'm from the Dominican Republic — so an island or beach theme was our first thought." With a theme in mind the couple was easily able to select a color scheme of mint and coral accented with brass and gold. Since Kimi has a background in design, she popped her palette and furniture ideas into a sketching program. Here's what she came up with: Kimi started the project by painting the room a cool green hue, Sherwin William's Mint Condition. Then she stenciled an accent wall behind the crib using the Starfish Allover pattern in a bright white, Sherwin William's Pure White. This is the couple's third stenciling project. They love stenciling and had this to say about it, "We loved the idea of applying patterns on our walls, however, wallpaper tends to be expensive, you have to deal with adhesives and most of the time you have to get it professionally installed, then if you get tire of it you have to get it professionally removed. So for us stenciling just seemed like the right move, we could do it ourselves and the day we get sick of it we can just throw some paint over it." We can't argue with that! OK, ready to see the completed space? Here you go... The couple describes their nursery as airy, refreshing and contemporary. They love that it's fun and sophisticated with subtle references to the Caribbean theme.Their best advice for other decorating parents is to decide on the overall feel of the nursery and then find pieces that fit that feeling.
