Don't Let Your Flower Pots Wear White After Labor Day

Cutting Edge Stencils Gives Simple Steps For Painting a Pretty Pattern on a Flower Pot

Happy Monday, my home decorating enthusiasts! Wait, what's that Cutting Edge Stencils sees sitting in the corner of your living room? Is that a plain jane, white planter? Uh oh, I'm glad we spotted it because Labor Day is right around the corner and you all know the seasonal rule right? Typically in fashion, Labor Day marks as the grand finale for wearing white. In fact, as you pack up those gorgeous skinny white jeans and opened toes shoes you might as well toss in that ole' white planter. Before the fashion police come knocking on your door, Cutting Edge Stencils and Drab to Fab Design have a super crafty idea to rescue that old flower pot. Meet Whitney, the DIY craft queen (as we like to call her) from Drab to Fab Design. She is a stenciling all-star so you might remember her stunning hallway redo. Recently, she had a boring dingy planter pot that was in desperate need of a makeover. We sent her our Shipibo Craft Stencil and presto chango she turned it into this! The fashion police won't catch a white planter in her home after the holiday! Here's the stenciling scoop on how-to stencil your flower pot (this project comes from Drab to Fab Design):

First you're gonna need this stuff listed below:

  • A flower pot
  • A stencil (for this project the Shipibo Craft Stencil was used)
  • Stencil brush <--- We prefer the one in this link.
  • Blue painter's tape
  • Small paint tray or plastic plate
  • Paper towels
  • Craft paint like Ceramcoat (found at Michaels or JoAnns)
1. Prepare the Surface: Use a sponge to clean your flower pot with a solution of water and dish washing liquid. This will ensure that all of the dust and dirt have been cleaned off the planter. If you're not starting with a white flower pot then give it a base coat of paint. In this project, the planter was painted using Valspar’s Misty Gray. Secure the Stencil: Use blue painters tape to secure the stencil to the flower pot while you paint. 3. Start Stenciling: Pour some paint onto a plate or paint tray. For this project, Ceramcoat 14kt Gold from JoAnn’s was used. Then using your Stencil brush dip it into the paint. Blot off the excess paint onto your folded paper towel until the brush looks almost dry. The key to stenciling is using as little paint as possible. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed and smudge. Always start with the edges. Use a dabbing motion with your stencil brush to start painting in from the edges of your design. Depending on how big your flower pot is, you may need to reposition your stencil, lining it up with the painted pattern. Continue on with the pattern until the entire pot is covered.
