Learn How To Stencil Ombre Wall Art Using The Feather Stencil

We'd like to you to meet Angela, the creative blogger behind Grocery Shrink. Angela loves to share ways to save on grocery bills while expanding her pantry. She writes about reaching financial goals by eliminating waste in everyday spending. Today she's showing off her stenciling skills with a DIY project that will have fans decorating their walls and saving money.
Angela inherited a large 30" x 40" white canvas from her neighbor after their garage sale. It was big, blank, and full of possibilities. Angela had a Pinterest board full of DIY wall art ideas. One of those creative projects included using a stencil to make wall art. Angela was ready to try this! She browsed our large collection of stencils and decided the Feather Allover Stencil was perfect for her project. It's a new stencil pattern featuring a decorative bird feather perfect for nature or bohemian inspired projects.
With her Feather Allover Stencil in hand, Angela was ready to create her easy peasy wall art. She invited her daughter to help out with the project. Rather than simply stencil the feather pattern onto the canvas, she chose to be creative and create an ombre backdrop. Angela painted the canvas using blue, white, and black acrylic craft paint that she had purchased at a local craft store. Carefully the duo added more black to darken the shade for the bottom and more white to lighten the shade for the top. Here is a video showing how the ombre painted backdrop was made.
As soon as the ombre backdrop was dry, Angela was ready to add the Feather Allover Stencil. She used blue painter's tape to adhere the stencil to the painted canvas. Then she painted the stencil pattern in metallic gold using a dense foam roller. If you are recreating this project at home, be sure to roll off extra paint so it doesn't bleed under the stencil. The key to stenciling is using very little paint. Angela needed to apply several coats of metallic gold to get the look she desired. Because the canvas was so large, she did need to lift the stencil and reposition to finish her project. Ready to see how it all turned out? Here is her DIY canvas wall art.
After her project was complete, Angela shared it with her son. She was concerned that her art was not perfect. She said, "My 8 year old son stood beside me and breathed, “It’s beautiful.” I pointed out the ooze and he said, “That’s why it’s beautiful. The flaws tell you a human being did this. It adds value.” Those are some wise words from a little boy.
We think her canvas is full of personality and character!
Angela decided to hang her artwork in her son's room. We think it looks perfect!
