Use Wall Stencils To Make Dia de los Muertos Inspired Home Decor
Welcome back, my Cutting Edge Stencils friends. The sugar skull is an iconic symbol of Day of the Dead and is easily recognizable by its creative patterns and inclusion of bright colors. If you are looking to dress up your home in honor of the festive holiday then our stencil designs can help! Crafting Dia de los Muertos decor is easy and affordable with our stencil patterns. Today we're sharing a fun project using reclaimed wood and our Sugar Skull Wall Art Stencil.
Before we walk through the stencils for this project, here is a quick video tutorial!
Erika, our in-house craft guru, had spotted a wooden wine box sitting in the trash. She scooped up the wood and decided to use it to craft Dia de los Muertos decor.
Erika took the wooden box apart. She used a wood glue to hold two panels together and then nailed a supporting piece of wood on the back side. This created her wood canvas.
Erika let the wood glue dry over night. Then she sanded the wood canvas.
After the wood canvas was prepped and ready to go, Erika stained the wood using a Varethane stain. Then she was ready to start stenciling. She decided to use one of our NEW Halloween Stencils for this fun project. She selected the medium Sugar Skull Stencil; this design is perfect for DIY Day of the Dead decor.
She sprayed the back of the stencil with Sticky Note spray adhesive which can be purchased from your local craft store or Amazon. Repositionable spray adhesive can help hold the stencil in place and reduce bleed.
She placed the stencil on top of the stained wood.
Since the Day of the Dead decor tends to be very colorful, Erika chose to paint the pattern in several vibrant craft paints using a stencil brush.
Erika made sure she brushed off any excess paint on a piece of paper towel. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed.
Once the entire design was painted, Erika lifted the stencil back to reveal the fun pattern.
Erika wasn't done yet! She chose to enhance the space around the Candy Skull pattern using our Lily Scroll Craft Stencil. Erika placed the scroll pattern around the edges of the skull and painted it in black craft paint using a stencil brush.
Are you ready to see how her Dia de los Muertos inspired wall decor turned out? It's perfect for the upcoming holiday!
Once again, we are amazed at how she managed to take someone's trash and turned it into a fun decorating treasure.
