Each week we walk our Facebook stencil fans through a crafty tutorial using stencils on our
Facebook page. Go ahead and like our page so you don't miss out on these creative videos. This week we chose to show our fans how to transform a plain wooden planter into a rustic, farmhouse centerpiece using the
Paisley Craft pattern. For those who love tutorials, you will love this instructional video.
Let's walk through the steps for completing this project. First we rounded up the supplies needed which included a 24 inch wooden planter from Home Depot, a two inch dense foam roller, a stencil brush, Benjamin Moore Ben paint in Navajo White, DecoArt craft paint in Mississippi Mud, FolkArt Antique Wax, sandpaper, five mason jars, two clamshell handles, and our
Paisley Craft design.
With all of our materials on hand, we were ready to start our project. We had purchased a pre-stained 24 inch wooden flower box from Home Depot. We painted it using Benjamin Moore Ben in Navajo White. When it was dry, we were ready to start
stenciling. We sprayed the stencil with repositionable spray adhesive. When the adhesive felt slightly tacky but not overly wet (about 5 minutes after spraying) we then placed it on top of the painted wooden box.
When we were comfortable with the placement of the stencil, we patted it down. The adhesive helped hold it in place. We used a two inch dense foam roller to paint the pattern in DecoArt Mississippi Mud. The excess paint was rolled off onto a piece of paper towel. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed.
After the pattern was painted, we lifted the stencil to reveal the
Paisley pattern.
Then we repositioned the stencil to continue painting the side of the box. Blue painter's tape was used to block off the edge of the box. We used a dense foam roller to paint most of the pattern. A stencil brush was used to paint the paisley pattern closest to the edge. We dipped the brush into the paint and then brushed off any excess on a piece of paper towel.
Now it was time to give our centerpiece a rustic touch. We used FolkArt Antique Wax in brown. We dipped the bristle brush into the wax which has a pasty feel and then painted it onto the wooden box.
Then we brushed the wax off with paper towel and revealed the pretty antique pattern.
The wax needs to set for twenty four hours and then it gets buffed with a dry rag. Then we used low grit sandpaper to rough it up and attached clamshell handles using a drill and screws. To complete the farmhouse style centerpiece we filled five mason jars with water and fresh flower.
