Welcome back, my Cutting Edge Stencils friends. A furniture makeover project is not only simple but also super rewarding especially when using our stencil designs! Sometimes you find exactly what you need on Craigslist. But more often, your Craigslist purchase could use a tiny bit of tweaking or even a full-fledged makeover! Our furniture stencils are here to help.
See how we transformed this Craigslist dresser using paint and our Roses Stencil pattern in this quick video tutorial.
Today we're sharing how to turn trash to treasure using our Roses Allover Stencil.
Erika, our in-house craft guru, picked up a jaw-dropping dresser for college on Craigslist. This beauty made it through five years of college dorm fun before it was ready to be relisted on Craigslist.
See that beat up top? This piece was ready to be a curbside castaway if Erika didn't give it a DIY stenciled makeover.
The first thing she did was clean off the dresser using a heavy duty Clorox cleaner. Then she sanded the top to remove any debris.
The top of the dresser was the most beat up from her college dorm days. Since it the dresser was made of a white veneer finish, sanding it would not remove all of the nicks and stains. Erika chose to paint the top of the dresser. She primed the top in STIX primer and painted it using Benjamin Moore Navajo White.
After cleaning and painting, the dresser was already looking brand new! Erika wanted to enhance the piece with a whimsical flower pattern and pretty pink hue. She selected the Roses Stencil in a large.
This romantic floral stencil pattern worked perfectly with the curvy shape of the dresser. Erika sprayed the back of stencil with spray adhesive. We like to use Sticky Note spray adhesive which can be purchased on Amazon. Then she placed the stencil on top of the dresser and painted the Rose pattern in Benjamin Moore's Fantasy Pink using a 4" dense foam roller.
She made sure she rolled off any excess paint on a piece of paper towel. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed. Then she painted the entire pattern on to the dresser. Once the entire design was painted, Erika lifted the stencil back to reveal the pattern.
Erika had to pick up the stencil and reposition it to complete the pattern across the top.
Now it was time to enhance the drawer fronts. The stencil comes with a top edge piece. Erika used a scissor to cut out a rose pattern from the free top edge. She sprayed the back of the stencil with spray adhesive and placed it in the center of the drawer front. Please be sure to prime and paint any surface that you plan to stencil.
Erika painted the rose in a Benjamin Moore's Fantasy Pink.
The dresser came with pewter colored drawer pulls. Erika chose to spray paint the pulls in gold and then placed them back onto the dresser. Something as simple as this can drastically change the look of the dresser.
Are you ready to see how Erika's stenciled dresser turned out? Here it is!
Erika didn't stop with one stencil project. Since our stencils are reusable, she rinsed it off with soap and water and used it to create custom canvas artwork. Erika had purchased primed 16"x 20" canvas from a craft store. She painted the canvas using Benjamin Moore Navajo White. Then she placed the Roses Stencil on top and stenciled the pattern in Benjamin Moore Peony Pink. To complete her artwork, she framed it using a $10 Ikea frame that was spray painted in gold. Simple and gorgeous!
