The Best Ikea RAST Hack Ever Using Stencils!

Stencil Patterns Can Personalize A $35 Ikea RAST Dresser

Welcome back, my Cutting Edge Stencils friends. A furniture makeover project is not only simple but also super rewarding especially when using our stencil designs! This week Erika, our in-house craft guru, decided to transform an unfinished Ikea Rast dresser using paint and a fun stencil pattern. This is an inexpensive and easy furniture project to complete especially when using Cutting Edge Stencils. Makeover this simple, inexpensive set of drawers into a showpiece for any room using your favorite stencil pattern. Today we're sharing how to turn trash to treasure using reclaimed wood and our Otomi Craft Stencil. Erika purchased an unfinished pine Ikea Rast chest for $35. Erika's creative wheels started spinning and she saw lots of potential in this plain dresser. To kick off this project, Erika removed the knobs from the dresser. Then she painted the dresser in a custom mixed paint color using a 4" dense foam roller. The custom mix was a combination of Benjamin Moore's After Midnight and Bermuda Turquoise . Erika painted one complete coat of paint onto the dresser. Then she used a light grade sandpaper to smooth down the finish. She applied a second coat of paint after it had been sanded. Here is the completely painted Ikea Rast dresser! Erika decided to use one of our popular furniture stencils for this fun project. She selected the medium Otomi Craft Stencil. This pretty pattern was inspired by traditional Mexican tribal textiles. With the stencil pattern in hand Erika was ready for the fun part, stenciling! She sprayed the back of the stencil with Sticky Note spray adhesive which can be purchased from your local craft store or Amazon. Repositionable spray adhesive can help hold the stencil in place and reduce bleed. She poured white chalk paint into a small tray and then rolled a two inch dense foam roller into the paint. She made sure she rolled off any excess paint on a piece of paper towel. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed. Then she painted the entire pattern on to the dresser. Once the entire design was painted, Erika lifted the stencil back to reveal the pattern. It was looking better already! Erika had centered the pattern on the dresser so she needed to finish it off to the edge on each side. She used painter's tape along the edge to ensure that paint stayed on the drawer fronts. Erika lined up the stencil. She painted the pattern to finish off the side. Erika repeated the Otomi pattern until the entire front of the dresser was stenciled. She painted in the knobs in Modern Master's burnt orange metallic paint and then placed them back onto the dresser. There you go! All it took was some paint and our Otomi Craft Stencil to transform the plain Ikea Rast dresser into this boho chic piece of furniture.
