Stenciling A DIY Kitchen Backsplash Makes for a Simple and Cost Effective Makeover

Good morning, my creative home renovators! Cutting Edge Stencils is curious if your kitchen is feeling dated and drab. A kitchen renovation can be a huge project, but have no fear because we have a simple yet cost-effective makeover idea. A small stencil enhancement can go a long way in terms of decor. In fact, we noticed more and more home renovators, just like yourself, using stencils to create a stylish kitchen backsplash. We'd like you to meet Alison, the creative DIYer from The Alison Marie Blog. Alison has been in the process of updating her kitchen with one DIY project at a time. She likes to say that she has big dreams but a small budget. Don't we all? Well recently, she fell in love with Moroccan-looking tiles, which are commonly used for kitchen backsplashes, but unfortunately Moroccan tiles are one of the most expensive tiles on the market. Yikes! It's a good thing that Alison is as clever as she is crafty. She decided to create her own DIY kitchen backsplash using one of our popular Moroccan stencils. Alison chose to paint the kitchen in Sherwin Williams White Duck, a cool white. While she painted the whole kitchen this color using a matte finish, she painted the backsplash area in a high gloss to get the shiny look she desired. Then she selected our Rabat Craft Stencil, one of our most popular stencil patterns. Alison chose to mix it up a bit. Rather than stencil the traditional way using a stencil brush and paint, she decided to trace the stencil using a silver Sharpie paint pen. It's a pen that can be used on virtually any surface and contains oil-based opaque paint. Alison used painters tape to keep her stencil in position while she traced the stencil design. Here she is working through the process. Once the tracing of the stencil was complete, Alison painted a clear finish over it using Miniwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. The clear coat finish makes it very shiny but it also makes it easier to wipe off any food debris. Then using her paint pen, she filled in some of the Rabat shapes. Here is her completed backsplash... And this is a close-up of the gorgeous stencil work. Alison had this to say about her completed project, "Ah I love it so much!
