DIY Stenciled Accent Pillows Using the Japanese Peonies Stencil

Welcome back, my home decor enthusiasts. Cutting Edge Stencils is excited to kick off the week with a special guest post on stenciling accent pillows from our sister company, Paint-A-Pillow. We introduced Paint-A-Pillow not too long ago and you read all about that here but to give you a quick refresher, it's an innovative stenciling kit that will allow you to create your own designer accent pillows in a snap. We'd like to introduce Laura, the craft queen behind the blog Occasionally Crafty. Laura has stenciled several projects using Cutting Edge Stencils and she was super excited to try out Paint-A-Pillow. Laura chose a beautiful floral pattern, the Japanese Peonies Paint-A-Pillow Kit, because the design worked well with her living room rug. She also selected several paint colors and pillow embellishments. Here is what she created with her pillow stencil kit: Those are beautiful, don't you agree? We'll give you a minute to pick your jaws up off the ground and then we'll walk you through how you could easily recreate the pretty pillow covers. Laura opened her box and said, "I had to take pictures of the packaging because I thought it was cleverly put together." The pillow kit arrives with everything you need to complete one accent pillow. That center box is a took kit that holds all the supplies and embellishments. All you have to do is simply lift it out and start stenciling. The basic pillow kit comes with one free Premium Soft Textile Paint by Jacquard. Laura purchased four additional colors for $3.95 each to further enhance her pillows. She commented, "I felt they were a good quality paint and reasonably priced." Now that Laura had her kit, she was ready to start stenciling. Laura said, "I think my favorite thing about the whole process, was the way Paint-A-Pillow created a way to keep the pillow cover and stencil, stationary. " She used a stencil brush to paint the flower pattern, starting with the lighter paint colors. If you're recreating this at home, be careful not to overload the brush with paint. Brush off the excess paint onto a folded paper towel until the brush looks almost dry. The key to stenciling is using as little paint as possible. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed and smudge. Laura painted the darker colors next. Once the entire pillow cover was painted, Laura peeled back the metal tabs holding the stencil in place and lifted the stencil. Look at how perfect that pattern looks! Laura loved how this project let her get creative with painting the flower using shading. She wanted to give the pillow a little texture and pop. The painted pillow dried quickly and Laura was ready to embellish it with tassels! She had selected standard tassels. Ready to see how her stenciled pillow cover turned out? Gorgeous, right?
