One Kings Lane the ultimate home decor curator, when lo and behold we spotted our
Indian Inlay Stencil Kit on their style blog. Let's stop so we can do our happy dance! We always knew our stencils were on the rise but this piece proves it's a trend that's here to stay.
Are you curious as to who this fab stenciled staircase belongs to? Well it belongs to
Elana Frankel, the One Kings Lane Senior Style and Photo Director however it was stenciled by Special Projects Editor, Megan Pflug.
This is how the project began. Elana Frankel's home is actually a converted church built in the 1800s. The stairs, while functional, felt a bit boring in the otherwise unique structure. Megan notes, "It just didn’t reflect the exuberant style and energy of Elana or her young family. In short, it needed a little love." And Megan was ready to step up and take on this stair challenge. Here is a shot of Elana's staircase before its pattern and color makeover.
Megan knew that Elana wanted to paint the stairs a shade of blue. She also knew that Elana was a big fan of prints so she planned to incorporate a pattern into the stair riser's design. After Megan had spent some time online, she was inspired by the beautiful bone-inlay stenciled furniture that she saw on our site. It was then that she knew our
Indian Inlay Stencil Kit by Kim Myles was the perfect stencil for her project. Next she selected her colors. Rather than using one shade of blue, she decided to alternate three shades to create a subtle ombré effect. For the base coats of the stair risers, she selected Farrow & Ball in Lulworth Blue, Cook’s Blue, and Pitch Blue. Then she stenciled the design in Benjamin Moore's White Dove. style blog. Megan says, "To my delight, Elana was as thrilled as I was with the final result."
Stenciling Stairs: Tips & Tricks
1. Lightly mist the back of your stencil with spray adhesive then wait a minute or two until the adhesive is slightly tacky to place it on the stair riser. This will help hold it in place and keep your lines crisp.
2. Use very little paint on your brush and build up layers until you reach the desired shade. For this specific project, two coats of paint were needed.
3. Apply paint in a tapping motion with a
stencil brush.
4. The toughest part about stenciling stairs is getting the edges and corners completed. Remember our stencils are quite flexible and can bend to fit the space.
