Cutting Edge Stencils Shares A Stenciled Side Table Makeover
Welcome back, my DIY friends! Cutting Edge Stencils wants to know if you love a good Craiglist find. We thought so! We love those hidden gems too. Unfortunately, sometimes those treasures come with a lot of cobwebs covering them. Today we're excited to share how one creative gal transformed a beat up side table into a stylish gem!
Meet Rachael, the fashionista and creative DIYer behind the blog Style Every Day. Rachael found a mid-Century/modern table on Craigslist for $15. The listing mentioned that wooden table needed a little TLC. When Rachael saw the item, she noticed that it had deep scratches on the top. Despite the imperfections, she knew it would be perfect for her St. Louis office space.
The first thing Rachael did was lay out a plastic tarp in her work space. Then she removed the hardware from the table. She gave it a good sanding using a medium 80 grit sanding block. She wasn't too worried about taking all of the stain off because she planned on painting it. She did make sure she sanded it enough that it was rough all over. After it was sanded, she used a damp rag to wipe off any dusty debris.
To repair the deep scratches on the top, Rachael used Elmer’s Wood Filler. Once the filler was dry, Rachael was ready to start painting. She primed the table using a paint brush and Zinsser Cover Stain. After the table was primed, she painted two coats of regular flat house paint in a color similar to Benjamin Moore's flint AF-560.
Next was the fun part! Time to stencil a pretty pattern. Rachael had previously purchased our Casablanca Allover stencil for a house project but she felt the pattern was just perfect for the table makeover. She secured the stencil with painters tape. Then she poured her paint into a foam plate. Rachael used a color similar to Benjamin Moore's harbor side blue 740. She says, "While I typically use lots of paint on my brush, it’s really important to have almost no paint on your brush or you will end up with your paint bleeding under your stencil. I barely dipped the tip of my brush and then dragged it around on a styrofoam plate until there was no excess paint."
After the paint was dry, Rachael used two coats of Minwax Polyurethane to give it a final protective coat and a slight gloss. She bought some fun knobs from Target and presto chango, she had a designer looking table!
Here is a shot of the pretty stenciled pattern. We just love the pop of turquoise!
